Maoists kill man for selling brew

ONGOLE: Maoists shot dead a 40-year-old man at Gurrapusala village of Yerragondapalem mandal in the early hours of Tuesday for selling illicit brew in the village. Maoists had earlier warned Vadla Bala Ankaiah, a Rajaka by caste, not to sell the brew in the village.

Six Maoists, including four women, came to his house, took him some distance and shot him dead. - Special Correspondent

Arms seized

KADAPA : Police seized about a dozen kit bags, a revolver, two tapanchas, some bags of rice, cereals etc. after intense exchange of fire between Grey Hounds forces and CPI (Maoists) in a forest area near Guvvalacheruvu in Ramapuram mandal on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Exchange of fire

Warangal: A police party on combing operation exchanged fire with naxalites of Sekhar dalam of Prathighatana group near Shapelli village of Tadvai madal on Tuesday. There were no casualties, but police recovered five kitbags, a revolver and 60 rounds of ammunition from the spot. - Staff Reporter

EdCET key released

Tirupati: After successfully conducting the Education Common Entrance Test (EdCET 2005) on October 30, Sri Venkateswara University has released the key to various methodologies on Tuesday. It will be available on `www.apsche.org' for a week. Urdu medium key will be available from Wednesday. The results will be out by fourth week of November. - Staff Reporter

Explosives seized

ANANTAPUR: The district police arrested D. Prakash of Anantapur town at Pamidi bus station in the district on Monday night and seized 100 gelatine sticks and 500 detonators. The police had checked the Adoni-bound bus on specific information. On being questioned, Prakash told the police he was told to handover the explosives to a person who would meet him at Adoni. - Staff Reporter

Woman electrocuted

ANANTAPUR: A woman farmer, K. Anjinamma (48), was electrocuted at Chinna Kodipalli village in Roddam mandal on Tuesday. According to a complaint lodged with the police, negligence by Transco was cited as the reason for the electrocution. - Staff Reporter

Couple killed in mishap

ADILABAD: Sampangi Krishnaiah, 50, an Assistant Engineer at Suddavagu project in Bhainsa mandal and his wife Laxmi, 45, were killed in an accident on Tuesday. According to reports, the couple had gone for a holy bath in the Godavari on the occasion of Kartika Pournami. They were hit by a vehicle near Japrapur cross roads. - Staff Reporter

Three drowned

KHAMMAM : Three persons were drowned in the Godavari near Manuguru town on Tuesday. A group of people, who came to the town from Samitisingaram, had a dip in the river at 4 a.m. Three of them slipped off the ghat. - Staff Reporter

Tabling of report on Alipiri sought

HYDERABAD : Prakash Singh, former Director-General of BSF, who inquired into the attempt on the life of TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu by naxalites at Alipiri near Tirumala on October 1, 2003, has demanded tabling of the report in the Assembly.

In an open letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Mr. Singh said the report was submitted to the State Government on February 9, 2004. - Special Correspondent

Naxal surrenders

ADILABAD: Sirikonda Laxman alias Jagdish, a member of the Mangi dalam of the CPI (Maoist), surrendered to the district police on Tuesday citing ill health and disillusionment with naxalite policies as reason. - Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD : The AP Transco vigilance sleuths, led by DPE Srinivas conducted raids on Tuesday in Yellareddy mandal and booked cases against 87 persons who were allegedly pilfering electricity, according to information. - Staff Reporter

MP's appeal on Volcker report

Nellore: The former Chief Minister and Visakhapatnam M.P, N. Janardhana Reddy, has described the issue relating to Volcker report, which went into the oil deals to Iraq as `very sensitive' and accordingly appealed to all not to comment over it at this juncture.

"Making adverse comments over the report and attempting to create a furore now, is not desirable," said Mr. Janardhana Reddy. The Central Government, acted in the best interests of the country, he asserted. - Staff Reporter

awareness walk

TIRUPATI: World Diabetes Day observed on Tuesday in the temple city of Tirupati with enthusiasm. The highlight the global diabetes walk by children drawn from different schools in and around Tirupati to create awareness about the disease, which often resulted in amputation of foot. The rally was organised by the GSM Diabetes and Obesity Care Centre, Tirupati. Private hospitals and nursing homes organised free diabetic camps and counselling programmes for patients. Plea for setting up auto nagar

ANANTAPUR: Six office-bearers of the Anantapur Automobile Workshop Owners' Association, including its president Basha, launched an indefinite hunger strike here on Tuesday, demanding development of auto nagar immediately.

Mr. Basha said that though there had been demand for auto nagar since 1978 neither the State Government nor the elected representatives of Anantapur had taken up the cause seriously.

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had laid foundation stone for development of auto nagar near Rapthadu last year but there was no progress in the direction till now. Staff Reporter

Dismissed from service

HYDERABAD: The Government has dismissed a former Assistant Public Prosecutor S. Prabhu from service following his conviction in a corruption case.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials trapped the APP on April 23,1999, accepting Rs. 500 bribe from a complainant while he was working in Sullurpet of Nellore.

Subsequently, the Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases in Nellore sentenced Prabhu to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment, as the latter was found guilty of the crime, a press release said. Staff Reporter

Training programme

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation is planning six-month training programmes in brass sheet metal, granite stone cutting, thunga mat weaving and soft toy making at Khammam and gem stone cutting and bamboo craft at Bhadrachalam.

Trainees will be paid a monthly stipend of Rs.350 each and the master craftsman will be paid Rs.2,500 monthly. Craftspersons with experience can approach the manager of the Lepakshi Handicrafts Emporium, Podduturi Complex, Hanamkonda.
