ELURU: A meeting of adivasis held on Tuesday at Singanapalli in Polavaram mandal under the joint auspices of the Adivasi Struggle Committee Against Polavaram Project, Agency Girijana Sangham and Andhra Pradesh Girijana Sangham took serious note of the "threatening postures" of West Godavari district Collector Lav Agarval against the opponents of Indira Sagar project. Recalling that the Collector recently stated in the media that the administration would initiate criminal proceedings against those stalling the project, the meeting said it vindicated the Government's attempts to muzzle the voice of project critics. Palla Trinadha Rao, a tribal activist, criticised the Government for choosing sites for building alternative colonies for the oustees of Indira Sagar Project outside the scheduled area. He apprehended that the tribals would be deprived of special privileges and safeguards provided in the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution if they were rehabilitated outside the scheduled areas.
