BANGALORE: The Jindal South West (JSW) half-marathon is set to be flagged off from the Sree Kanteerava stadium on December 18. Organised by the Sports Promotion Team (SPT) alongwith the technical expertise from the Karnataka Athletic Association (KAA), the JSW half-marathon with a prize-money of Rs 1.25 lakh is primarily aimed to encourage a healthy lifestyle for Bangaloreans. "The Corporates, the college and school children besides the general public are expected to turn up in good numbers," said Amit Saran of the SPT. Ms. Sangita Jindal, Chairperson JSW Foundation, who flew in from Mumbai for the press meet said that "this event could take a few years to get as `big' as the Mumbai marathon, held early this year, but nevertheless a beginning has been made and hopefully would be as `big' an attraction in due time." Charu Sharma of the Fourth Umpire fame appreciated the concept behind the event and promised to make the half-marathon a success in all aspects. The event will have five categories of races: besides the half-marathon (21.079 km) which will be flagged off at 7 a.m., there would be a 3 km race for under-15 boys and girls; a senor citizen (60 plus) run-3 km; a `Run Bangalore' open event for 5 km; besides a 1.6 km stretch for physically/mentally challenged. The route for the event a circuitous one, touching the arterial roads of the city could come in for a slight alteration. Ashwini Nachappa will be the race director.
Hat-trick by Dheeraj
Dheeraj Jayanth scored a fine hat-trick to guide St. Joseph's to a thumping 5-1 win over Cathedral HS in the under-14 section of the Baldwin Shield Inter school football tournament at the Baldwin school ground here on Tuesday. Princton got the other two goals for the winners while Clive reduced the margin for Cathedrals. In the under-12 section St. Joseph and Bethany were locked goalless and shared two points. In the under-17 category, Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) downed SDA 7-1. Damanjeet netted four times while Rohan (2) and Sherwin were the other goal-getters for FAPS. Madan reduced the margin for SDA in the 43rd minute.
Narrow win for Ajay
Ajay Bushan scored a narrow 778-716 win over Sharan Rajani in the junior league of the State ranking billiards tournament here today. Balaji Reddy who has now made Bangalore his base to further his playing career, downed Goutham Kalro 645-519. In the ladies billiards, R Umadevi and T.V. Sridevi notched big victories. While Sridevi outplayed Bhanumathi Mendon 226-64 former national champion R. Umadevi was fluent in her 256-60 win over Meghana Goud. Indira Gowda prevailed over Matilda Fernandes 114-99 in another match.
