Condemn the resolution passed by Belgaum City Corporation

  • State Government urged to supersede Belgaum City Corporation
  • Memorandum demanding action against Belgaum corporation submitted

BELLARY: Several pro-Kannada organisations, including the district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, under the banner of Karnatak Rakshana Vedike, took out a procession here on Tuesday protesting against the resolution adopted by the Belgaum City Corporation calling for merger of Belgaum and all Marathi-speaking areas with Maharashtra. The vedike urged the State Government to supersede the Belgaum City Corporation.

An effigy of Belgaum Mayor Vijay More was burnt at the Gadagi Chennappa Circle. The protestors submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister N. Dharam, Singh to Deputy Commissioner calling for stern action against the Belgaum Corporation.

Condemning the decision of the corporation, pro-Kannada activists said such an act will disturb the peace and linguistic harmony of the State. Taking exception to the provocative attitude of activists of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti, the vedike urged the State Government to ban the samiti and arrest those responsible for passing the resolution under the Goonda Act.

Mayor G. Somashekar Reddy was among those who participated in the demonstration.
