Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow: The BJP today alleged that the communal riots in Mau have proved that Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was not sensitive towards the sentiments of the majority community. ``The politics of vote bank is responsible for the situation wherein the CM wants to ignore the hard realities which have surfaced after the riots," former chief minister and BJP national vice-president Kalyan Singh said here. Mr Singh, who was addressing a joint press conference with BJP state unit president Kesharinath Tripathi, claimed that people against whom FIRs have been lodged for inciting riots were now part of the `peace committee' formed to resolve the crisis. "These very people now share the dais with the district magistrate...no one is arresting them,'' Mr Tripathi alleged. The BJP also took exception to the fact that the three-member probe team headed by former chief secretary and chairperson of the Board of Revenue Neera Yadav was yet to visit Mau to take a stock of the situation. "Even after Governor T.V. Rajeswar visited Mau, `nate," he said. The BJP leaders also alleged that the compensation announced by the State Government to riot victims was yet to reach the right hands. The BJP leaders said senior police officials were deliberately asked not to open fire on rioters in a bid to defend the vote bank of the ruling Samajwadi Party. The BJP also defended its MLC Prof Ramji Singh, arrested in connection with the riots. "His name is being deliberately dragged to soften the case against Mau MLA Mukhtar Ansari who was shown on TV instigating violence," Mr Singh added. -- UNI
