PROTEST RALLY: Family members of the victims of Naxalite attack blocking the road near Jehanabad jail during the visit to Chief Secretary G.S. Kang and D.G. Police Ashish Ranjan Sinha, in Jehanabad on Tuesday.
Lucknow/Mirzapur: The Uttar Pradesh Government has declared a red alert in Mirzapur district to check any possibility of inter-State movement of Naxalites, after their raid on the Jehanabad jail in Bihar even as U.P.'s inter-State borders with Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have been sealed. The orders to seal the State's borders were issued late last night, Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha said today. Security forces have been put on alert in the Naxalite-affected districts of Sonebhadra, Mirzapur and Chandauli. Officials of the Naxal-hit districts met yesterday to review the situation and ensure adequate security measures. ``The Naxalites might try to enter Uttar Pradesh following pressure mounted by security agencies in Bihar,'' Mr Sinha said. State Director General of Police (DGP) Yashpal Singh last night issued orders to tighten security measures in districts sharing inter-state borders and international borders with the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. UP's Bahraich, Siddharthnagar and Maharajganj districts in eastern parts share their borders with Nepal. Meanwhile, security has been enhanced on trains and a strict vigil is being maintained at all railway stations. A report from Mirzapur, quoting DIG (Range) Javed Akhtar said security at the district jail there has been increased as some Naxals are lodged there. He said the district has been placed on red alert as a precautionary measure. A vigil has been mounted on people known for having links with naxalites in the Vindhyachal range. The various routes leading to UP in the hilly terrain have been barricaded and police personnel deployed at far flung outposts have been ordered to remain extra vigilant. -- UNI
