CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government has decided to adopt a two-pronged strategy to check the falling sex ratio in the State. While those encouraging the birth of female child would be rewarded under various schemes, those indulging in female foeticide would be severely punished. An official spokesman said here on Tuesday that the Hooda Government had taken several steps to check the declining sex ratio. It had amended the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) Act, constituted a State Supervisory Board under the chairmanship of the Health Minister and constituted a multi-member State Appropriate Authority. It had also appointed Civil Surgeons as the District Appropriate Authorities for their respective districts. The District Advisory Committees with the District Family Welfare Officer, District Immunisation Officer, a gynaecologist, paediatrician and three women social workers including Secretary District Red Cross, had also been constituted. As per the figures of Census 2001, the sex ratio in Kurukshetra was 771 per thousand males, in Sonepat 788, Ambala 782, Kaithal 791 and Rohtak 799. He added that 854 ultrasound clinics, six mobile clinics and 66 genetic counselling centres were registered under the PNDT Act, 44 ultrasound clinics were registered in Government Hospitals and Institutions.
