Anna Varsity seeks IIT help for digital library

Staff Reporter

Smart cards to access the library will be introduced soon

TAMBARAM: Anna University has sought the assistance of the Indian Institute of Technology to help the varsity set up a full fledged digital library, according to K. Nithyanandam, Director, Central Library, Anna University.

The University has also submitted a second proposal to the All India Council for Technical Education in order to get funds for digitisation.

50 computers

Speaking at the valedictory function of a seminar on `Information requirements of today's library user,' at the B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College at Vandalur on Saturday, he said Anna University at present had 50 computers in its library and needed at least 50 more.

Stating that the dream was a paper-less library, Dr. Nithyanandam said there were some practical problems, as they could not digitise certain books due to copyright problems.

Benefits

He said digital libraries were of immense benefit to students, researchers and staff as huge volumes of information could be accessed in no time. At the Anna University, faculty members had access to information in the library through desktops from their rooms without having to go to the library.

They were planning to introduce a host of modern features as part of establishing a complete digital library, but gradually in phases.

Smart cards

They would soon be introducing smart cards, Dr. Nithyanandam added.

This would eliminate the requirement of personnel to man libraries as visitors to the library could borrow books and other sources even in the absence of staff, he added.

Knowledge centres

V.M. Periasamy, Principal, Crescent Engineering College, said libraries were knowledge centres and urged librarians to impress upon the college managements the need to develop and improve them.
