Visually handicapped get soft loans

National Federation of the Blind launches self-employment scheme

Chennai:
The National Federation of the Blind, Tamil Nadu, on Monday launched a self-employment scheme and distributed soft loans to 127 visually handicapped persons. .
Social Welfare Minister Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy distributed the loans ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 2,50,000 for projects such as telephonebooths, dairying and saree shops, among others.
S.K. Rungtha, general secretary, NFB, said various projects were run by the federation besides those run through its branches and affiliates. They include the national Braille library at Bahadurgath in Haryana, a Braille press in the same place, placement service and self-employment schemes, mobility service schemes, besides a residential school at Mangalore, The Federation could undertake and run the projects due to its fund-raising special welfare programmes, he said.
N. Vijayabhaskar, MLA, distributed Braille books to institutions in the State. They were provided free by the Federation.
