CHENNAI: "It is not just patients who queue up outside Sankara Nethralaya, donors also line up for the privilege of giving to this institution," Chief General Manager of the State Bank of India (SBI) P. Chaudhuri said on Tuesday evening.

He was speaking at a function to hand over a cheque for the purchase of an auto keratometer and ultrasound A scan — equipment crucial for making measurements that enable more effective cataract surgery — to K. Ravishankar, Chief Executive Officer, Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya.

He said the donation from SBI Chennai Circle was part of SBI's contribution towards the eradication of blindness.

Speakers at the function hailed SBI's sustained contributions to Sankara Nethralaya and the close relationship between the two institutions.

S.S. Badrinath, president and chairman of the Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, was present.

Chandrashekhar Shetty, who holds posts in several philanthropic organisations, said the country continued to face a problem of equity.
