Chennai: The Exnora Innovator's Club of Choolaimedu has planned a door-to-door campaign for creating awareness on garbage segregation at home. The campaign, scheduled to begin on November 20, will be carried out across Choolaimedu every Sunday. Apart from door-to-door visits by volunteers, residents will also get a lecture-demonstration at a common meeting point. "We have printed 10,000 pamphlets, which give a clear idea of how garbage should be sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable material," said S. Kasturi Rangan, secretary of the club. Paper, some types of plastic, metal and glass qualify as recylable material. Kitchen waste can be also composted to make natural fertiliser. All other waste will be non-recyclable. Mr. Kasturi Rangan said residents would be urged to keep the sorted material near their doorstep or in a place easily accessible to Corporation workers who collect garbage. Exnora has also requested the Chennai Corporation officials to participate in the awareness programme. The Chennai Corporation started the source segregation drive last year but public participation is still poor. "We believe that a sustained campaign can bring a positive change," Mr Kasturi Rangan said. The campaign will cover Shankarapuram, Sowrastra Nagar, Ramanujam Street, Kamaraj Nagar and Gandhi road in Choolaimedu.
