State to file review petition on admissions

Staff Reporter

Cabinet Subcommittee suggests constitution of expert panel

BANGALORE: Even as a Central law on professional college admissions is awaited, the State Government on Tuesday decided to file a review petition before the Supreme Court within a week to protect the interest of social justice in the admissions.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee on Higher Education, which met here on Tuesday, has asked the Law Department to file the appeal to ensure reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and other weaker sections in professional colleges, Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash said. This follows the apex court's August 12 order, which did away with reservation of seats in private colleges.

The sub-committee directed the Higher Education Secretary to constitute a panel of five experts to look into various issues concerning higher education and admissions to professional colleges, including a possible increase in the cut-off percentage of 35 for admission to engineering courses. The Tamil Nadu Government had raised the eligibility to 60 per cent.

The expert panel was asked to fix the eligibility percentage and submit a comprehensive report within 15 days, Mr. Prakash said. Besides, the Higher Education Department will convene a meeting on November 30 to finalise draft rules for a State legislation. The Union Health Ministry had sent a draft Bill to the State Government seeking its response by November 30 on the proposed rules governing admissions to medical, dental and other health sciences. But the Government is yet to receive the draft rules being framed by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry for engineering courses. The Government is learnt to have decided to urge the Medical Council of India (MCI) to change the guideline on criteria for professional college admissions.
