THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: District Collector N. Ayyappan has written to the Chief Electoral Officer recommending the disqualification of three Independent candidates in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha bypolls for not submitting their election expense statements. The candidates are Padmarajan, Panniyode Ravindran and Chennan Ravindran. Mr. Ayyappan told The Hindu here that candidates are expected to submit such statements every three days. However, the three candidates had not submitted a single statement so far. "I found one candidate in particular taking a lot of advertisements in newspapers. I repeatedly called him and told him that if he does not submit the expense statement, I would have to recommend his disqualification. He did not comply," the Collector said. The recommendation for disqualification has been made under section 10 (A) of the Representation of People Act (1951) and under section 171-1 of the Indian Penal Code, he added.
Election ID card not compulsory
Persons who figure in the electoral rolls can cast their vote in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha bypolls even if they do not have the election ID card, the Collector has notified. A press note issued here on Tuesday said those who have the ID card should compulsorily bring it to the polling station. If for any reason a voter is unable to bring the election ID card, he or she should produce the original copy of any one of the identity documents approved by the Election Commission such as passport, driving license, PAN card, identity card issued by State/ Centre/ PSU/local bodies, bank/kisan/post office pass books of accounts opened before September 30, 2005, student identity cards or the original of a registered title deed. If the identity document is accepted by election officials, the voter must sign an affidavit before casting the ballot. The task of setting the ballot papers in the electronic voting machines (EVMs) to be used in the bypolls has been completed. 1,055 voting machines have been installed in as many booths. Ten per cent of the total number of voting machines have been set and put on standby. The machines were set in seven centres under the supervision of the candidates, their representatives and election officials. These machines have been put under the supervision of `sectoral officers'.
