This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru has issued the following statement: "I do not know how to give expression to my feelings of deep gratitude to all those who have sent me messages of affection, greeting and good wishes on the occasion of my birthday. These messages have come to me from various parts of the world and from every part of India. It is a little difficult for me to acknowledge them all separately and individually and I hope to be forgiven if an acknowledgement does not reach any person who has been good enough to send me his good wishes. I am deeply moved and overwhelmed and a little frightened at this abundance of affection and goodwill. No man can be worthy of all this and no man, certainly, can live up to the expectations which these messages embody. And yet, my heart rejoices at this love and affection, however unworthy I might be of them. I am particularly happy that the children of India have made this day their own. No greater honour could have been done to me and no greater joy can come to me than to feel that these buds and flowers in the garden of India have given me their affection. May they all have opportunities of growth and development which are their right and due. My love and blessings to all of them. To the youth of India, I send my affectionate greeting and my invitation to join the mighty adventure of building the New India of our dreams and to work for world peace and fellowship. There can be no more exciting task or greater adventure than this. To the people of India, my humble duty and my devotion to the utmost."
