dated November 17, 1955: Time on Indira Gandhi

Next week's Time magazine will carry a piece about Mrs. Indira Gandhi, whom it describes as a "new political personality emerging in India." After briefly tracing her background, the magazine says, "Since the death of his old friend, Mr. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, Mr. Nehru has lacked a personal trouble-shooter and confidant. Last week, it looked as if Indira was being groomed for the job." On her political thinking, Time's capsule comment is, "She seems to be considerably to the Left of her father."
