Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The co-chairman of the New Delhi-based confederation of non-government organisations (NGOs) of Rural India, L.V. Saptharishi, has called upon NGOs to work towards the welfare of the poor. Inaugurating the Pondicherry chapter of the confederation (CNRI) and also its academy for training NGO functionaries here on Tuesday, Mr. Saptharishi, a retired IAS officer, said CNRI had presently a total membership of 2000 NGOs spread over 25 chapters in different parts of the country. He said the concentration of NGOs should be targeted towards eradicating poverty. The purpose of the CNRI was to function as a common platform for NGOs. Economic generation programmes could also be successfully implemented, as there were several financial institutions and funding agencies to carry out programmes targeted for the poor and have-nots. Mr. Saptharishi said the NGOs should also identify various impediments standing in the way of the linking of beneficiaries with the schemes. He also stressed the need for utilising talents of the youth and assemble the talents for the common good. Similarly the experienced professionals could also be nurtured and utilised to act as links. K. Bhanu, president of the Tamil Nadu Chapter of the CNRI, said government departments alone could not implement various welfare programmes and hence the role of NGOs had become indispensable. The Tamil Nadu chapter of the confederation would start a training centre in Tiruchi on December 3. Assistant General Manager of NABARD (Pondicherry district) R. Nithyanandam said NGOs had played effective role in tsunami relief works. He wanted NGOs and Self-Help Groups to utilise various government-sponsored schemes.
