Madikeri: The birth centenary of late General Kodandera S. Thimmaiah will be organised by the Federation of Kodava Samajas here on March 31, 2006, honorary president of the Federation of Kodava Samajas and president of the Akhila Kodava Samaja Matanda C. Monnappa has said. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Monnappa said efforts were on to invite President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to the celebrations. Chief of the Army Staff J.J. Singh had confirmed his participation. A State-level elocution competition on Thimmaiah and a quiz competition would be organised at the Cauvery Women's College in Virajpet on November 23. It would be inaugurated by Mireille Chengappa, daughter of the late General. Educationist Mukkattira M. Chengappa, president of the Federation of Kodava Samajas Ballachanda A. Nanaiah and secretary of the Cauvery Education Society Chiriyapanda K. Poovappa, would be the guests. The valedictory address would be delivered by the former Minister M.C. Nanaiah, and Lt. Gen. Codanda N. Somanna (Retd.) and Maj. Gen. Kongettira M. Chengappa (Retd) would be the guests.
`Sunny Side'
Efforts were on to take back "Sunny Side," bungalow of the late General, now housing the offices of the RTO here, Mr. Monnappa said. The centenary committee members met Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh two weeks ago. Mr. Singh assured to convene a meeting this month. The building would be converted into a museum, he said. Nayada Vasu Nanjappa, who heads the sports subcommittee, said sports events would begin from November 24, starting with the shuttle badminton tournament at Gonicoppa Planters' Club.
Hockey match
On November 26, an exhibition hockey match would be played at the Government Junior College between Army XI and Rest of XI. A mini marathon would be held on November 27, starting at 8 a.m. from Murnad to Virajpet for men (17 km), and from Betri to Virajpet (11 km) for women. 89-year-old sportsman Chenanda A. Muthanna would inaugurate the sports events, Mr. Nanjappa said. Cheppudira Harry Devaiah, who heads the cultural subcommittee of the centenary celebrations, said cultural events would be held at the Ponnampet Kodava Samaja, Ponnampet, on November 29. As many as 85 cultural troupes had confirmed their participation so far.
