CHENNAI: Passengers, including a team of doctors, travelling in the Coromandel Express joined hands to treat a fellow passenger on Thursday. The doctors from Dean Foundation were returning from a conference in Kharagpur. When around 4 p.m. there was a call for a doctor to treat 32-year-old Bipin Kumar Ratha, who was suffering from excruciating pain. K.A. Nambudripad of the Foundation examined Mr. Ratha and found that he suffered from haemophilia and had internal bleeding in his right hip joint, a condition called `haemarthrosis.' Mr. Ratha, who has been suffering for a week, was on his way to Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore. He is a nursery school teacher in Orissa. Dr. Nambudripad asked for a morphine injection to bring down the pain, which was brought from the Foundation to the Chennai Central railway station. Fellow passengers too joined hands to help Mr. Ratha. N.R. Jayaraman, who was travelling in the same compartment, organised for an ambulance at station; others donated Rs. 1,000 for Mr. Ratha's travel expenses. When the train reached the Central station around 8.30 p.m., Mr. Ratha was administered morphine and sent to Vellore in an ambulance. The Dean Foundation is a non-profit medical charitable trust based in Kilpauk that provides palliative care, Deepa Muthaiya, its chairman said.
