Anand Parthasarathy
Tunis: Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran has offered the world community Indian technology developed to address multi-language challenges. In his address in the general assembly on the opening day of the U.N.-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society, Mr. Maran said the nation had developed special tools in multi-lingual machine translation and other similar areas, which it was ready to share with other countries where many languages were spoken. "We have developed a $ 200 computer but that is not enough," he added. "We have to reach every one of our citizens." He praised the "pioneers who made possible the Internet" possibly a neat way of distancing India from countries who have been making shrill noises about the perceived U.S. control of the Net, even while endorsing its transformation into "a truly multi-layered and multi-stakeholder entity."
