NEW DELHI: Increasing its pressure on the Manmohan Singh Government, the Left parties have given notices in the Lok Sabha seeking a discussion on the vote against Iran by India in the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Lok Sabha leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Basudeb Acharia and the Communist Party of India, Gurudas Dasgupta, have submitted notices ahead of the winter session of Parliament scheduled to begin on November 23. "I have submitted a notice for [a] discussion under Rule 193," Mr. Acharia told The Hindu . He said the subject would come up when the Speaker holds a meeting of floor leaders, which has been scheduled for next Tuesday. Mr. Dasgupta also confirmed that he had given a notice for discussion. The thrust of the subject that the CPI (M) is seeking discussion on is the decision of the Government of India to support a resolution moved by the European Union-3 countries and vote against Iran, which it felt has adversely affected relations with Iran and also the country's independent foreign policy. The relevant rule under which the CPI (M) is seeking a short duration discussion can be raised by any member on a matter of urgent public importance and specify clearly and precisely the matter to be raised. It has to give reasons for raising the discussion on the matter in question. Unlike Rule 184 in the Lok Sabha, Rule 193 does not entail voting.
