MALVAN: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Wednesday called upon people here to take revenge against Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, who "stabbed him in the back," and defeat him in the Assembly by-election here, scheduled for November 19. "Teach Narayan Rane a lesson and settle the score. Aren't you going to punish him for stabbing me in the back?" Mr. Thackeray said at a public meeting.

Mr. Thackeray, who would always hold his public meetings on a large ground, had to do with a smaller venue. Sources said that even this ground became available only after official intervention. Mr. Rane's supporters had allegedly booked all the grounds in the constituency to deny the Sena a venue. Mr. Thackeray said he expelled Mr. Rane because he was indulging in "anti-party conspiracies by approaching the NCP and the Congress for many months as stated by top leaders of those parties."

Mr. Rane, at public meetings and through leaflets, had been saying: "take revenge for the insult meted out to me, son of Konkan."

He had accused the Thackerays of taking money for issuing party ticket. The senior Thackeray had denied this.
