Veteran actor Madhu will be presented the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award at a function at the University Senate Hall here on Saturday. A highlight of the evening will be a presentation of `Madhu songs' by noted singers under the auspices of the Trivandrum Film Fraternity. Significantly, the honour has come in search of the 72-year-old actor the same year that the Malayalam film classic `Chemmeen' is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It was in the 1965 film that Madhu put in one of his most enduring performances as a jilted lover, Pareekkutty, in the company of Sheela. Formerly a college lecturer, Madhu did a course at the National School of Drama at New Delhi before launching himself into a film career. His notable films include `Olavum Theeravum,' `Enippadikal,' `Thulabharam,' `Bhargavi Nilayam,' and `Swayamvaram.' Madhu directed as well as acted in more than a dozen films, notably `Theekkanal,' `Priya,' `Sindooracheppu,' `Kamam Krodham Moham' and `Udayam Padinjaru.' Madhu also produced a few films and once owned a film studio in Thiruvananthapuram. The patriarch is still active in films, the latest being Suresh Gopi's `Rashtram.' `Naran,' in which he co-stars with Mohanlal, was a runaway hit. The J.C. Daniel Award was instituted by the State Government in 1992 and is given to persons who have made lasting contributions to the growth and development of Malayalam cinema.
