CHENNAI: Maj. Gen. B. Sivasankar, VSM, assumed charge as General Officer Commanding of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala Area here on Thursday. He took over from the outgoing GOC, Maj. Gen. Paramjit Singh, AVSM, VSM, who has been promoted as Lt. Gen. and posted to northern India. Maj. Gen. Sivasankar was commissioned on December 20, 1970, into the Grenadiers Mewar. He raised 22 Grenadiers and commanded the Battalion in Baramulla and Pullwama in Jammu and Kashmir during `Operation Rakshak'.
Vishisht Seva Medal winner
He was with the Union Ministry of External Affairs as Director, Military Affairs, in New Delhi, before assuming charge as the GOC of an Infantry Division on western borders. He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal while in command of the Battallion in Counter Insurgency Operations. After a brief signing-off ceremony and before bidding adieu to Maj.Gen. Singh, the new incumbent told reporters that he took pride in assuming charge as the GOC of the oldest Area. "I have the examples of several predecessors which will be the guideline for me to take the Area to greater heights. It is a very challenging task and I am sure that the cooperation and support extended to my predecessors will continue for me to discharge my official duties."

An emotional Maj. Gen Singh said he was leaving with a heavy heart. His stint in the Area had been most rewarding and gave him utmost satisfaction. He thanked the media for supporting various endeavours and projecting the armed forces in a positive manner.
