BANGALORE: Two Indian scientists — Goverdhan Mehta, former Director of the Indian Institute of Science, and Anupam Varma — have been elected to the International Council for Science (ICSU), Regional Committee for Asia and the Pacific.

Prof. Mehta has been elected President of the ICSU and is the second Indian scientist after M.G.K. Menon to reach the position, while Prof. Anupam Varma has been elected as the Chairman of the same Council.

Prof. Mehta, who is the Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad, and a fellow of all the three science academies in Bangalore, Allahabad and New Delhi, is an expert in the field of chemistry. He has published more than 300 research papers in leading international journals and contributed to several monographs in the areas of contemporary interest in organic chemistry. He was also elected to the fellowship of the Royal Society, London, earlier this year. Prof. Varma has worked as National Professor of Eminence at the Advanced Centre for Plant Virology, Department of Plant Pathology, at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. He has also worked with Food and Agriculture Organisation of the U.N. to develop the Horticultural Research Institute at Ibadan, Nigeria. Besides contributing to fundamental and applied aspects of plant virology, he has developed technologies for sensitive diagnosis of the virus and virus-like diseases of crop plants.
