Police alert on naxalite death anniversary

Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts asked to be extra vigilant

CHENNAI : Police in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts have been asked to be extra vigilant in view of the forthcoming death anniversary of a naxalite leader who died in police action at Uthangarai three years ago. The authorities have asked the officials to be more vigilant in view of the observance, police sources said.

The naxalite leader, Siva alias Parthiban, was shot dead in an encounter on November 24, 2002. Twentysix persons were arrested by the police. Of those arrested, nearly 20 persons have been lodged in the Central Prison, Chennai. Security for the prison has already been strengthened , the sources said.

The Tamil Nadu police had a few months ago intensified their vigil along its borders with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to prevent possible infiltration of naxalites. As of now, there was no naxalite problem in Tamil Nadu, thanks to the steps taken by the State Government. The police were now on the look out only for a few key operators of the past, the sources said.

Personnel of the Special Task Force, which was earlier deployed to catch the forest brigand Veerappan, were doing the rounds in the forests of the border districts.
