CHENNAI: City XI gained the crucial first innings lead against Combined Districts in the three-day C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer Shield cricket (seniors) tournament at the ICL-Guru Nanak College grounds. With City taking the first innings lead of 44 and an overall lead of 123, it will, in all probability bag the honours. Resuming at 14 without loss in reply to City's 234, Districts, on the penultimate day on Thursday, folded up for 190. For Districts, opener N. Devendran made a quick-fire 71 (67b, 5x4, 5x6). No. 6. E. Suresh, who made a sedate 42 (81b, 5x4), ran out of partners. When the situation threw up an ideal opportunity for the District players to come up with big scores, they failed. A 67-run stand in 13 overs between Devendran and Petson Mathew (17) for the first wicket was the only worthwhile partnership in Districts' innings. Off-spinner Aashish Kapoor was the pick of the lot for City, claiming four wickets. R. Naresh who shone with the bat on Wednesday, bowled well to pick two wickets. City, in its second essay, strolled its way to 79 for three at stumps. Opener C. Hemant Kumar survived twice and was finally out for 20 (107b, 2x4). K. Shri Vasudeva Das and Sunil Viswanathan were at the crease. The scores: City 234 & 79 for three in 37 overs v Combined Districts 190 in 54.3 overs (N. Devendran 71, E. Suresh 42, Aashish Kapoor four for 41).
