Mumbai: Local girl Sayali Dolas stole the show on the first day of the Complan National sub-junior (U-15) chess championship here on Thurday by defeating two seeded players in the first two rounds. Sayali accounted for the biggest upset of the day by outclassing her fifth seeded Andhra Pradesh rival N. Pragnya and then showed it was no flash in the pan by outsmarting 13th seed Sitalachumi (Tamil Nadu) in the second round. Another surprise was in store in the girls section when fancied Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa went down to Mohana Sengupta of Bengal in the second round. The former ran into time trouble, which proved costly as she resigned after 57 moves with a few seconds remaining on her clock. Most of the seeded players, including top seeds Dasari Sai Srinivas (boys) and Ramya Krishna (girls), sailed through the initial rounds in the championship. The champions and runners up in both sections would earn the right to represent the country in the next World and Asian junior championships respectively to be held in Turkey and Indonesia. PTI
