CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has ordered a techno-economic feasibility study to evolve and implement a Skybus Metro Rail project in Amritsar and Ludhiana on build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis to decongest these cities by providing rapid mass transport system. According to an official spokesperson, the Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh had shown keen interest in introducing this system from bus terminal Amritsar to Golden Temple in the first phase. He has also engaged the services of the `Opus International' to study the viability of the project in these two cities within two months before taking a final decision. The spokesperson further said that it was a zero investment proposal for the state government. The projects envisage trains running 20 feet above the ground level with maximum capacity to ferry 80,000 passengers per hour either side, he added. The Punjab Infrastructure Development Board was designated nodal agency for these projects. Chief Operating Officer of Opus International, Mohinder Singh, informed the meeting here that the Hyderabad Skybus Metro railway network system undertaken by the company was first of its kind in the world, was likely to be commissioned soon. He also mentioned that the company had also successfully undertaken 1.5 km stretch of test track in Goa on an experimental basis.
