HYDERABAD: Over a 1000 of the country's crack shots will converge on the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) shooting range in the picturesque Hyderabad Central University campus on November 30 to take part in the 10-day National championships. Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Rathore, Anjali Bhagwat, Navin Jindal, Mansher Singh, Jaspal Rana, Zoravar Singh Sandhu, Gagan Narang and Manavjit Singh Sandhu are likely to be among them.
Strong challenge
Addressing a press conference here, Amit Sanghi, Secretary of the Rifle Association of Andhra Pradesh, said the State would mount a strong challenge through Gagan Narang, Darius Chenai, Pooja Reddy and Asher G. Noria. Competitions would be held in the 10 m air rifle/air pistol, 25 m pistol, 50 metre (.22 rifle and pistol) and shotgun (trap, skeet and double trap) in conformity with International Sport Shooting Federation (ISSF) rules. Indian squad for the Commonwealth Games at Melbourne next year will be selected depending on the performance here. Peruvian coach Juan Giha said that displays by Rathore, Anjali and Gagan Narang had proved Indian shooters were world class. He said a training programme was under way to physically and mentally equip shooters gear up for international competition.
