NEW DELHI: Underlining the need for greater cooperation and networking among various small and unorganised business and economic groups in the changed global environment, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University Yoginder K Alagh on Wednesday said in the present scenario of globalised trade as per World Trade Organisation guidelines, self-help and community-based groups need to pay a pivotal role in ensuring better deal for unorganised and disadvantaged groups. Delivering the 18th Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial IFFCO Lecture on "The State of Rural Development in India" here, Prof. Alagh, who is also the trustee of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, said strong bonding and cooperation could ensure more bargaining and negotiating power to such groups, particularly for those living in rural areas. "For this purpose, we need organised action through formal or informal cooperation and raising of functional self-help groups or other community-based organisations." Recalling the contribution of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in nation-building and in strengthening cooperative movement in the country, Prof. Alagh said he ensured that India developed fast by adopting modern technologies. Pandit Nehru also laid more emphasis on rural institutional reforms based on Gandhian ideals and removal of feudal institutions, development of rural social infrastructure and of cooperatives, Prof. Alagh said.
