DEHRA DUN: The World Bank review mission has appreciated the efforts of the Uttaranchal Government and NGOs in providing medical care to the highly disadvantaged populations in three high altitude development blocks of Dehra Dun, Uttarkashi and Chamoli districts. " We are more than happy at the performance of the World Bank assisted health programmes in the State and hope that the NGO model of Chakrata, Mori and Ghat blocks will be replicated for extending the much needed health care in underdeveloped areas of Uttar Pradesh also'', said Birte Holm Sorensen, head of the visiting World Bank team. Expressing satisfaction over the progress made in the health sector, Ms Sorensen said it was always nice to work with Governments that were interested in investing in health care for the poor as that led to the development of a healthy workforce in the coming years. Bhupinder Kaur, director, Uttaranchal Health Systems Development Project said that a good beginning had been made in setting up new or upgrading the existing health facilities in the State. Efforts were now on to identify units that could be developed as telemedicine centres. The Indian Space Research Organisation had agreed to provide the necessary satellite connectivity, software and hardware free of cost, she said. Summing up the deliberations, the Chief Secretary, M Ramachandran emphasized on the need for strengthening primary health care in the second phase of the project.
