Three arrested on charge of possessing tiger pelt

MANGALORE: Personnel of the Dakshina Kannada District Crime Intelligence Bureau on Wednesday arrested three persons on charges of illegally possessing and trying to sell a tiger pelt at Kurnadu Kokkarakallu under Mulki Police Station Limits. They recovered a tiger pelt, and other parts of a tiger, worth Rs. 2.25 lakhs. Confirming this development, B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, said the offenders, Jaison D'Souza (19) of Moodubelle, Udupi, Srinivas Tantri (21) of Korangarapady, Udupi, and Joy Hubert (25) of Puttur were on their way to Mangalore from Udupi on a motorcycle when police intercepted them. Mr. Dayananda said the men were transporting the tiger pelt from Srinivas Tantri's house in Udupi to Mangalore. Srinivas Tantri is said to be a priest in the Udupi Krishna Temple.

A case has been registered under the Wildlife Protection Act, Mr. Dayananda said.
