MADURAI: Water from the Vandiyur tank, the main source of ground water recharge in the northern parts of the city, is being wastefully discharged into the Vaigai River. Despite the tank not receiving any inflow or surplussing, the sluice along the Sivaganga Road police outpost has been kept open for the past couple of weeks.
Residents' association's plea to Collector
The Malligai Kudiyiruppu Nala Sagam has urged the Collector, D. Raajendiran, to stop the "wasteful" discharge. Recalling the depletion of groundwater during summer in areas nearby the tank, such as K.K. Nagar, Anna Nagar, Tahsildar Nagar and Gomathipuram, the memorandum said that there was an abrupt recharge of the ground water table following storage in the Vandiyur tank after the recent rains. Though it was not raining and the tank was not receiving any inflow, water was being released threatening yet another crisis for the people in the region, the residents said.
