`Culture policing has serious implications for freedom of expression'

HYDERABAD:
Women's World Organisation for Rights, Literature and Development (WORLD), a network of women writers has expressed grave concern at the public campaign being mounted against actresses--Khushboo and Suhasini--for their views on pre-marital sex.
Joint campaign
In a joint statement issued here on Thursday, Vasantha Kannabiran, Ritun Menon, Volga and Ammu Joseph said personal opinions on existence or non-existence of pre-marital sex could not be taken as insult to communities or cultures.
"This kind of culture policing and mob censorship has serious implications for freedom of expression."
Sign of bankruptcy
The right to freedom of expression must be guarded at all costs, they said adding that it was a sign of bankruptcy of political action that a remark was blown out of proportion to raise hate and rouse public anger when issues of injustice, corruption and livelihood were not touched upon.
They expressed concern at the role of the media in sensationalising routine responses and placing women at risk.
