NEW DELHI : "There is a need to bring about some far reaching changes in the Indian health care industry including setting up of an accreditation system, streamlining the medical tourism industry and putting in place a strong insurance input,'' said the Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Committee on Healthcare, Naresh Trehan. He was speaking at the announcement of the CII and Indian Healthcare Foundation's 3rd India Health Summit to be held here in the Capital from November 21. Titled `Universal Healthcare: India Challenges', it will discuss among other issues role of IT in enhancing healthcare research, the need and challenges in healthcare industry, initiative on rural healthcare -- the way forward, cost and viability of healthcare delivery systems, challenges of public health and Indian challenges in health. Presenting his `objection' to the term medical tourism and asking it to be replaced by `medical value travel', conference chairman, Harpal Singh said: "We are uncomfortable with the term medical tourism. It demeans our medical expertise, which is at par with the best in the world.'' The summit which will see the participation of all key players in the health care and related industry, will assess the development work carried out in the previous year.
