Minni magic stands out in love flick

THE SMILE MAY NOT LAST: Kamalinee Mukherjee and Sanjay in `Meenakshi.'

Meenakshi (Telugu)

Cast: Rajiv Kanakala, Kamalini Mukherjee, Sivakrishna, Ragini, Kavita

Director: T. Prabhakar

Love subjects are not new to Telugu film industry. However, director Prabhakar tries to give a new twist to the subject.

He ropes in Kamalini Mukherjeewho became famous overnight with the success of 'Anand' for the female lead and Rajiv Kanakala is paired opposite her as lover.

The director, provided not only the story and screenplay for the film but also the music, however, by shortening his name as Prabhu. Though he lost grip here and there, he tried his best to attract the audiences.

Meenakshi or Minni (Kamalini Mukherjee) is a village belle. Her father murders his wife in a case of dowry harassment, and accidentally he and his mother, too, die. Minni's maternal uncle Sitaram (Sivakrishna) brings her up.

Nandu (Rajiv Kanakala) from a nearby city visits their village and loses his heart to Minni. He reveals his love to Minni and leaves the village to bring his parents and sister to propose the alliance.

Nandu's sister is greedy and instigates her mother to demand more dowry. Though they agree the alliance for Rs. 25 lakhs, they demand Rs. 10 lakhs more. A scuffle ensues and in the process, Nandu pushes Sitaram. Unable to digest the incident, Minni calls the police and gets Nandu and his parents arrested.

When Sitaram is admitted to a hospital, doctors recommend a surgery which costs Rs. 5 lakhs. As Minni could not raise the money, she gives an advertisement in a newspaper that she has no objection to marry anybody who comes forward to pay the hospital bill of her uncle.

The US angle

One Sanjay from the US pays the bill and Sitaram gets well. One fine morning Sanjay flies down to India, and stays with Sitaram and Minni. Will Minni marry Sanjay as per her promise? What happens to Nandu's love? Can Nandu convince Minni that he is misguided? All this forms the climax part.

Rajiv Kanakala is adequate as hero while Kamalini excels. Ali and Rambabu provide comic relief. Tunes by Prabhu are not melodious. Cinematographer Suresh Kumar's work capturing the beauty of Konaseema stands out.
