Floral tribute

CHENNAI: The statue of Kappalottiya Tamizhan V.O. Chidambaram, installed at the entrance of the Port main gate, was garlanded by the Port Trust chairman K. Suresh and deputy chairman G.J. Rao, to commemorate the 69th memorial day of the sailor and freedom fighter. Senior officials at Port Trust also paid their respects.

Supply of free saplings

The Environmental Society of Mandaveli will supply free of cost 10,000 saplings of avenue trees. As this is the best season for planting, those interested may contact R. Maanavan at 24937060 or Subramaniam at 24938368.

Art contest

Some 2,000 students from 148 schools in the city will participate in the Classmate Young Artist 2005 contest being held by the ITC. Children from classes V to VIII will participate. The topic will be given on the spot and a jury led by Trotsky Marudu will judge the entries. Chart paper will be provided at the venue. Students may bring drawing materials.

Music festival

The Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, on the occasion of its 105th year, will hold a music festival from December 16 to January 3, 2006 at Vidya Bharathi, 55, Bheemasena Garden Road, Mylapore.

On the inaugural day of the festival the sabha's annual award for music, the Sangeetha Kalasarathy will be conferred on Aruna Sayeeram. Swami Gautamananda, president of the Ramakrishna Mutt, Chennai, will inaugurate the festival and confer the title on Mrs. Sayeeram. Experts and musicologists will deliver lectures and hold demonstrations daily.
