West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here on Sunday that his Government was completely supportive of the Right to Information Act and was working toward making it operational by January. The process of appointing Public Information Officers is on. Mr. Bhattacharjee said the State Government was committed to the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 and that the coverage of the mid-day meal scheme to all government and government-aided primary schools in the State was nearly total, according to noted economist and an organiser of the Second National Convention on the Right to Food and Work, Jean Dreze, who called on the Chief Minister at the conclusion of the convention. The three-day convention, organised by the West Bengal unit of an informal network of individuals and organisations committed to the right to food and related issues, ended at Badu near here during the day. About 600 delegates from 15 States took part in the convention, according to a spokesperson of the organising body. On behalf of the convention organisers, a memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister seeking implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005, universalisation of the Integrated Child Development Services as per the Supreme Court orders and the immediate implementation of all the orders of the apex court on the right to food [PUCL vs. Union of India and Others, Writ Petition (Civil)196 of 2001].
