British education hits the road

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: The British High Commission and the British Council on Sunday began a roadshow in Guwahati on educational opportunities in United Kingdom.

Popular Assamese singer Zubin Garg and British Deputy High Commissioner, Eastern India, Andrew Hall flagged off an Education U.K. bus, which will visit schools and colleges in Guwahati and Shillong.

Top destination

Dr. Hall said U.K. continued to be the top destination for students from India for higher education in business studies, law, medicine, humanities and social sciences, design and creative industries. "About 17,000 students chose the U.K. for educational aspiration from India last year. East and North-east India witnessed a staggering 34 per cent growth in the number of students going to the U.K. from this region," he said. During the roadshow the staff of the British Council and High Commission would be at hand to guide and counsel students.

Jeff Wilson, Head of Press and Public Affairs, British High Commission, said they would like to take the roadshow to government-run as well as private Assamese medium schools in the future.

Dr. Hall said 21,000 scholarships were offered by the British Government to overseas students.

The roadshows, exhibitions and seminars are part of the U.K.-India Education Initiative launched by British Prime Minister Tony Blair in New Delhi on September 8.
