CHENNAI: Findings by the World Health Organisation shows that one out of 10 children in India could be sexually abused at any given point of time.
To create awareness among children of child sexual abuse and prevention techniques, Karunalaya, a non-governmental agency, organised an awareness meet here on Saturday. November 19 is observed as International Day for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse. Karunalaya's director, N. Paul Sunder Singh, explained how children could form a network to know about an unsafe environment or unsafe behaviour. A cultural programme was conducted at the organisation's headquarters in Tondiarpet in which about 700 children participated. At another programme, Police Commissioner R. Nataraj and police officials participated in a rally and interacted with a group of children. The police gave out pamphlets that said in the past five years the city police had rescued nearly 1,660 abandoned children. Mr. Nataraj told children to report cases of sexual abuse to elders or the police. Recently, the police distributed 6.5 lakh pamphlets to create awareness of child abuse and related crimes, he said. A rally was conducted from Gandhi statue on the Marina to the Labour statue at Chepauk.
