Bhilai schools corner glory

Chennai: Two schools from Bhilai — Viswabharathi and Bhilai GHS, repeated last year's performance by capturing the boys and girls' titles in the PBA-KC Tech all-India inter-school basketball tournament at the Montfort indoor stadium, Santhome, here on Sunday.

While Viswabharathi HSS took control quickly and got the better of Cherupushpam HSS, Kannur, at 61-50 in the boys' final, Bhilai GHS had to fight hard to ward off the early challenge from Lady Sivasamy, Mylapore, to record a 83-74 victory in the girls' final.

K.C. G. Varghese, Chairman, Hindustan Group, distributed the prizes and cash awards. Both winners received Rs. 10,000 and runner-up Rs. 6000 each.

The results:

Boys' final: Viswabharathi 61 (Santhosh Kumar 21, T.R.S. Rao 18, Kiranpal Singh 15) bt Cherupushpam HSS, Kannur, 24 (Nikhil 31). Semifinals: Viswabharathi81 (T.R.S. Rao 32, Santhosh Kumar 24) bt Govt. Model HSS, Kozhikode 51 (Vimal P. Jaison 42, Boy Mathew 12; Cherupushpam HSS, Kannur 93 (Nikhil 47, Abin Thomas) bt St. Paul's Salem 81 (Anbu Kumar 42, Ramakrishnan 19).

Girls' final: Bhilai GHS, 83 (Deepa 22, Manjeetha 26, Shoshan 10) bt Lady Sivasamy, Mylapore, 79 (Monica 18, Sangeetha 33, Aishwarya 13). Semifinals: Lady Sivasamy 74 (S. Monica 26, B. Sangeetha 19) bt Holy Angels, Salem 55 (V. Hemalatha 11, Ganga 13); Bhilai GHS 70 (Deepa 26, Manjeeta 19) bt Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Erode, 22 (Karthika 11).
