Rain likely in southern parts of State

Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal

  • North coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry may also receive rain
  • Squally weather with wind speed reaching 55 to 65 km/hr likely
  • Fishermen advised not to venture into the sea

CHENNAI : Most places of south Tamil Nadu will experience rain or thundershower on Monday following the formation of a depression over southwest Bay of Bengal.

The depression, which, on Saturday, remained as a well-marked low-pressure area over southwest and the adjoining southeast Bay, lay centred on Sunday at about 600 km east southeast of Pamban. "It is likely to move slowly in a west north-westerly direction," according to a weather bulletin.

Many places of north coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry may also receive rain on Monday with isolated heavy rain over south Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts and Karaikal area of Pondicherry.

Squally weather with wind speed reaching 55 to 65 km per hour is likely over south coastal parts of the State and Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Pudukottai districts besides Karaikal. The remaining districts of the State may experience strong wind, whose speed may occasionally reach 45 to 55 km per hour. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea off Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry coast, the bulletin adds.

A perusal of the rainfall pattern during the current northeast monsoon indicates that the State has received bountiful rain so far. For the period ending up to November 16, the Tamil Nadu sub-division (Pondicherry included) recorded 41 cm against the normal 29 cm, a deviation of 43 per cent.

All the districts have received excess rainfall except six districts, which registered normal or deficient rainfall. While Tuticorin and Tirunelveli are in the category of deficient rainfall, the other four — Dindigul, Kanniyakumari, Perambalur and Virudhunagar — come under the classification of normal.
