Auction that brought smiles

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Chocolates, paintings, toys, books, clothes... just about anything was on display with an affixed minimum price. Charts beside them indicated the bare minimum price to own them and each time the base price got hiked, the smiles on the faces of the students of Amboth village school brightened.

On Sunday afternoon, the International School of Hyderabad on Road No.1, Banjara Hills, was abuzz with activity as the Twin Cities Expatriates' Association held a charity auction to raise money for the tribal village of Amboth tanda on the city outskirts. The Intercultural Cooperation Foundation (ICF) set up the school in an area devoid of educational institutions in 1990. After crossing many obstacles and also resistance from the locals themselves, it now has over 900 students and 32 full-time teachers. ICF chairman Asif Mirza was taking care of the entire funding. The charity auction chaired by Robyn Smith was part of an effort to raise resources for the school.

Different organisations and individuals were requested to either donate money or an item for the auction and the response from the expatriate community was quite good.
