CHENNAI: A small motor connected to a miniature windmill; an empty bottle attached to a model of lungs to demonstrate the breathing process. These were among the simple but innovative ways employed by students of Nungambakkam Corporation Boys HSS to showcase their talent at `Science Fest' on Friday. Hosted by Satyam Foundation Chennai Chapter, the two-day exhibition has about 500 exhibits and working models made by students from sixth standard to twelfth standard. The higher secondary students displayed experiments demonstrating the working of a picture tube in television and the flow of electricity using magnetic force. Children of junior classes impressed visitors with models on air pollution and power distribution to villages using windmills. R. Navin Kumar and S. Prithviraj of sixth standard made the visitors guess the number of coins that needs to be dropped in a tumbler for the water to overflow. Other interesting models featured were an `erupting volcano' using chemicals for effect and a bulb that glows at the touch of a pencil tip. S. Srinivasan, school principal, said that such exhibitions gave an opportunity for the economically backward children and boosted their interest in science. About 1,000 students were expected to visit the exhibition, he added. The exhibition was part of the Eureka science programme introduced by Satyam Foundation to 50 city schools to enable students to conduct about 200 experiments with the help of a mobile science kit.
