dated November 22, 1955: Earth satellites

Dr. Joseph Kaplan, Chairman of the US Earth Satellite Programme, said in Chicago in a speech to the American Rocket Society, that American scientists planned to send about ten instruments-filled satellites into space during 1957 and 1958. At least five of the satellites - called "birds" - were expected to go beyond the earth's atmosphere and orbit round the world for about a fortnight at heights of between 200 and 800 miles. "The birds will be sent into space as part of the American participation in the International Geophysical Year from July 1, 1957."
