Intolerant society

The editorial, `Intolerance that is intolerable,' (Nov. 19) was brilliant. The fact that the people at the helm of the administration are largely silent on the present controversy reflects the duplicity and hypocrisy prevalent in our society. In spite of our progress in various fields, we have not been able to change our social outlook and have remained imprisoned in formulaic and unscientific interpretation of Indian culture. We have also failed to address larger issues.

Sutirtha Sahariah,
New Delhi

I fully share your apprehensions regarding the present intolerance in our society. Such unwarranted agitations can pave the way for the emergence of Talibanism. All freedom-loving people should condemn these agitations.

G.M. Natarajan,
Coimbatore

It is reassuring that various women's organisations as well as the Leftists have opposed the protests by a few parties in Tamil Nadu against actress Kushboo for her comments on pre-marital sex and against Suhasini for supporting her. Male chauvinism is at the root of the protests against the two actresses.

S. Jagadish,
Chennai

It is gratifying that the actors' forum and the Left parties have come out against the insulting protests against the actresses. Better late than never.

S. Baqr Ali,
Chennai

What is most distressing in the whole episode is that the courts in Tamil Nadu have been made a party to the tirade against Ms. Kushboo and Ms. Suhasini. Why could the magistrates, who admitted the cases against the duo, have not used their discretion and thrown out the cases at the initial stage itself?

K. Sathyanarayanan,
Bhopal

The harassment of the two actresses by a few political parties is nothing short of terrible. Unfortunately, this intolerance is sweeping the whole country. However, a welcome fallout of the episode is that organisations and people from all walks of life are coming into the open in support of the two actresses.

H.R. Bapu Satyanarayana,
Mysore

The Kushboo episode is distressing to all freedom-loving citizens. If we allow this to be uncurbed, it will destroy the very foundations of democracy.

K. George,
Chennai
