Special Correspondent

TAHDCO will provide training to Adi Dravidas and tribals to set up units

VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu Adi Dravida Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) is all set to establish industrial parks for women self-help groups, according to its chairperson Saroja.

Speaking at a meeting held to review TAHDCO schemes in Vellore district here on Monday, Ms. Saroja said the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Economic Development Corporation and the Tamil Nadu Minorities Economic Development Corporation also have their own schemes for setting up such parks. She appealed to bank officials to cooperate with the TAHDCO by providing loans to the SHGs. She gave an assurance that the TAHDCO would provide training to the members of the Adi Dravida and tribal women's SHGs to set up the units.

Ms. Saroja said Chief Minister Jayalalithaa wanted all the welfare schemes for Adi Dravidas implemented before December 30. The bank officials should sit with District Industries Centre authorities to identify ways to help the Adi Dravidas engaged in the handloom, power loom and beedi industry in the district.

Scheme for scavengers

The TAHDCO chairperson said 115 SHGs known as `Subamadhi Kuzhukkal', each comprising 10 women scavengers as members, would be formed throughout Tamil Nadu under the Scavengers Development Scheme. The scheme would be implemented in association with the municipalities, special village panchayats and village panchayats. Each SHG would be provided an assistance of Rs. 5 lakhs which included Rs. 1 lakh TAHDCO subsidy and Rs.75,000 margin money assistance.

Responding to the plea of the Gudiyatham MLA C.M. Sooryakala for the establishment of community halls for the Adi Dravidas, she said the Chief Minister had already asked the TAHDCO to establish community halls in areas inhabited by Adi Dravidas and tribals. The District Collector and other revenue officials and the municipal commissioners should help in identifying the land for the construction of these halls.

R. Vilvanathan, Sholinghur MLA, wanted the Government to establish a TAHDCO Bank to enable the Adi Dravidas and tribals to get self-employment and other loans easily. Mrs. Sooryakala wanted an industrial estate for the handloom sector set up in Gudiyatham.

R. Vadivel, Vaniyambadi MLA, wanted a tannery unit exclusively employing Adi Dravida women set up in the Vaniyambadi constituency.

S. Gopalakrishnan, District Collector, presided.
