New Director for NRSA

HYDERABAD: K. Radhakrishnan has taken over as Director, National Remote Sensing Agency, Department of Space. Dr. Radhakrishnan recently took over from R.R. Navalgund who is now Director, Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad. Dr. Radhakrishnan started his career in ISRO as an Avionics Engineer at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in 1971. He was Director of National Centre for Ocean Information Services prior to the present post. - Staff Reporter

Plan to intensify stir

HYDERABAD: Leaders of Andhra Pradesh Panchayati Raj Protection Joint Action Committee will meet at the Press Club, Vijayawada, on November 27 to intensify their agitation. The agitation is in protest against withdrawal of sand quarries, two per cent levy stamp duty and removal of powers to distribute old age pension from the purview of panchayats. - Special Correspondent

Ryot commits suicide

Kakinada: A tenant farmer, Medisetti Dorababu (25), has reportedly committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at his home in Kothakota village of K. Gangavaram Mandal on Sunday. According to Pamarru police, Dorababu had incurred heavy debts due to crop failure, leading to the extreme step. - Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The National Talent Search and National Talent Promotion Scheme examinations are scheduled to be held on November 27 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m in all district headquarters. Revenue body polls

HYDERABAD: Elections of the Andhra Pradesh Revenue Services Association will be conducted on November 26 and 27 for 2005-06 at Revenue Bhavan, Musarambagh, near Dilsukhnagar. Nominations will be received on November 26 and finalised on the same day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The elections are to be held the next day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The results will be declared the same day. - Special Correspondent

TDP office under siege

Kakinada: Mala Mahanadu workers laid siege to the office of the district Telugu Desam Party on Monday protesting against the TDP's stance of `divide and rule' with regard to the scheduled castes. They demanded that the TDP honour the Supreme Court verdict on SC categorisation. They also wanted the Telugu Desam to resolve to distribute lands, industries, trade and other resources among all castes in proportion to their population. - Correspondent

CRPF medical exam

HYDERABAD: A total of 1,249 candidates have qualified for medical examination and subsequent appointment for the post of constable (general duty) in the Central Reserve Police Force from Andhra Pradesh. The candidates have to report at the CRPF Group Centre, Chandrayangutta. The examinations are to be held on November 25, 26 and 28 to 30, December 1 to 3 and 5 to 9. Meanwhile, 904 candidates have qualified for medical test for constable post from Mahabubnagar and Warangal centres. - Special Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR: Ten candidates filed their nominations papers on Monday, the last day for filling nominations to contest the Maktal by-election. A total of 15 candidates have submitted their nominations to contest in the by election. - Correspondent

Depression over bay

VISAKHAPATNAM: A depression lay centred 350 km east-south-east of Pamban on Monday evening and is likely to intensify and move in a west-north-westerly direction, according to a weather bulletin by the Cyclone Warning Centre. Rain or thundershowers are likely at many places in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Strong winds with speeds reaching 45 to 50 kmph are also likely along and off south coastal areas. Fishermen in south coastal areas have been advised not to venture into the sea. - Staff Reporter

SP inspects police quarters

KURNOOL: Superintendent of Police B. Malla Reddy inspected the police quarters here on Monday and discussed with the families amenities in the locality. Mr. Reddy asked the engineering staff to construct proper drainage system and clear the garbage. The SP promised to construct a volleyball court for the youth at the quarters. - Staff Reporter

Rally against corruption

KURNOOL: NCC cadets took out a rally against corruption in the city here on Monday. Officiating NCC commandant Manoj Kumar Raut flagged off the rally at Silver Jubilee College, which culminated into a public meeting.

Elocution and cartoon competition was conducted for students in this connection. A. Sridevi of Kurnool Medical College spoke on cancer awareness. Associate Officer Abdul Khader said the rally was intended to motivate youth against corruption. - Staff Reporter

ATM inaugurated

KURNOOL: Zonal Manager Central Bank of India K.A. Somayajulu inaugurated the bank's ATM at Old Bus Stand here on Monday. He said by March next the bank would start 35 ATMs in the State and 400 at the national level. He said the bank had a network of 102 branches and 23 extension counters with a turnover of Rs. 4,700 crores in the State.

Mega Lok Adalat

MADANAPALLE: Additional District Judge-cum-Chairman of Mandal Legal Services Committee Madanapalle P. Ramesh Babu said that to give free advice to the poor in legal matters and serve them, the Lok Adalat had been introduced. He was speaking at a mega Lok Adalat held here recently.

A total of 138 cases were disposed off and from 1996 to 2004, 7,098 cases had been disposed. Suryanarayana, Ramalinga Reddy, K.V.L. Harinath, Nagabhushan Rao, Raja Venkatadri, judges, and P.T. Sarma and Sesha Reddy, conciliators, participated. - Correspondent

Boy found dead

Nellore: The body of a 13-yeard-old boy was found floating in a tank in Parlapalli village of Vidavalur mandal, on Sunday.

Initially, it was thought that the boy, Shiva Kumar, a class 8 student, went missing. However, following a complaint lodged by his parents, the police and the villagers conducted a search and found his body in the Aragadi tank. - Staff Reporter

Arrested by ACB

HYDERABAD: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Monday arrested a superintendent in the Panchayat Raj Executive Engineer's office in Nandyal, G. Venkateswar Reddy and a class IV employee P. Raja Rao, on charges of receiving Rs. 1,000 bribe. The tainted amount was recovered from Raja Rao who allegedly accepted the money on behalf of the superintendent, a press release said. - Staff Reporter

Stone laid for

college building

NALGONDA: Minister for Higher Education Pinnamaneni Venkateswar Rao has said that the State Government is determined to fill lecturer posts from June 15 to July 15.

According to a press release, he was addressing the gathering after laying foundation to a junior college building to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 29 lakhs at Nampally on Monday, he said that 4,400 lecturer posts fell vacant in various colleges in the State. Referring to the poor pass percentage, the Minister called upon students to strive hard to lay strong foundation for English.

KARIMNAGAR: Ten students' project reports on `Harness water for a better future' have been selected for the State-level science congress to be held in Kadapa on December 11 and 12.

According to DEO B. Manmadha Reddy and district coordinator of science congress S. Nageshwara Rao here on Monday, they examined 52 reports on Friday and selected 10.

The selected reports belong to: G. Ramprasad Reddy and Atiya Kulsum (Bhagavathi HS), V. Jyothirmayi (Laurel HS), G. Sampath Goud and Asifuddin (Sai Manair HS), B. Takes over as NIT Director

WARANGAL: Y. Venkateswar Rao of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Surathkal, Karnataka, assumed charge as Director of NIT, Warangal, on Monday. Prof. Rao graduated in mining engineering from Osmania University in 1971. He did his M Tech from Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1975. He worked as faculty member in Department of Mining Engineering, Osmania University and later joined Regional Engineering College, Karnataka. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Rao said that he would focus on building infrastructure such as adding more laboratories and the latest equipment, new hostels and classrooms.

Digitisation of old newspapers

CHIRALA: Andhra Pradesh press Academy will soon take up digitalisation of old newspapers, preserved in Saraswathi Nikethanam, a pioneer library in private sector at Vetapalem, according to Devulapalli Amar, Chairman of the academy.

At a function, held at Vetapalem, Mr. Amar presented 399 CDs already prepared by the academy with rare and old periodicals and magazines from the library. He said so far the Academy has prepared digital formats covering 16 lakh pages from 4 libraries--Saraswathi Nikethan, Vetapalem Gouthami Grandhalayam, Rajahmundry, Museum library Kakinada and Hyderabad State Library. He also released a book entitled "Chenetha Gunde Katha", published by the Centre for Handloom Information and Policy Advocacy, Chirala (CHIP).

Rajahmundry: Minister for Roads and Buildings, Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao, on Monday inaugurated school building in Vemagiri village, constructed under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. He participated in different meetings in Kadiyapu Lanka, Potti Lanka, Dulla, Damireddy Palle and Muramanda villages.

Addressing a meeting at Vemagiri, the Minister said that the Government was going to construct a reservoir on the hillocks of Bommuru to give protected water to 20 villages in Kadiam mandal. - Staff Reporter

Awareness meetings

VIZIANAGARAM: Awareness meetings will be organised by the Eastern Power Distribution Company of Andhra PradeshLimited (EPDCL) in Vizianagaram district from November 22 to 28 to educate consumers on the problems that would be taken up at the Consumer Grievances Redressal Forum to be held in Visakhapatnam during January 2006.

The awareness meetings would be conducted at the Dasannapeta Sub Station in Vizianagaram on Tuesday, at the Divisional Engineer's Office at Bobbili on Wednesday, at the Assistant Divisional Engineer's office at S. Kota on November 25 and at the Sub Station at Gajapathinagaram on November 28. Electricity consumers have been asked to avail of the opportunity. - Staff Reporter
