Chief Minister reviews the issue at a two-hour-long meeting with top officials

HYDERABAD: The Government ruled out review of G.O. No. 120 relating to Kolleru lake on the ground that High Court permission is compulsory for such an exercise.

The Government issued the GO seeking to restore Kolleru as a wildlife sanctuary by clearing all the encroachments up to 5ft contour level. The order was issued following a High Court directive disposing of a batch of petitions filed for protection of Kolleru.

Principal Secretary, Forests & Environment T. Chatterjee said the order was issued in line with the High Court order, he told reporters after a two-hour-long review of the Kolleru and other environmental issues by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Monday,.

Meanwhile, the stage is set for commencing dredging operations to deepen Upputeru, the only outlet of Kolleru, to send its surplus waters into the sea. Mr. Chatterjee is visiting Kolleru area on Tuesday to supervise the arrangements and inspect the site for construction of a regulator taken up to facilitate easy water flow into the sea.

The Chief Minister wanted steps to increase the forest coverage in the State to 33 per cent. Dr. Reddy indicated that an `aviation corporation' would be set up with a helicopter at its disposal which could be used for forest surveys and for police purposes.
