KOTTAYAM: Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University Jancy James has termed the reported move of the Kerala Nursing Council (KNC) to derecognise the nursing course offered by the School of Medical Education (SME) here "an academic crime" and "academic sin" and said the university will do everything to get back the recognition at the earliest. Speaking to mediapersons on the issues arising out of the alleged sexual assault at the SME, Ms. James said the university would take a series of steps to avert such incidents. These steps were finalised at a meeting of Syndicate members, principals of self-financing institutions, senior officials of the university and representatives of the parents of students at the SME. The measures include stringent implementation of the Anti-Ragging Act, formation of anti-harassment cells and a complaints redressal mechanism. The functioning of counselling centres at the affiliated colleges would be strengthened and action initiated against those in authority found wanting in taking timely measures to stop incidents of harassment, she said. An effective mechanism for reviewing the functioning of the system would also be formed shortly, she added. Ms. James said the information about the invalidation of recognition of the nursing course offered by the SME had not been officially passed on to the university so far and it was through mediapersons that she came to know about it.
